First the private, non-profit YMCA receives $2 million in public money from Albemarle County and now The Senior Center, Inc., another private, non-profit, wants an equal $2 million taxpayer handout from the Albemarle Board of Supervisors (BOS).

What do County Supervisors not understand about giving away our hard-earned and scarce tax dollars to private organizations?

Can you say: YMCA precedent?

Two million tax dollars to the Young Men’s Christian Association — from a Republican-controlled BOS just a few short years back!

Now perhaps another $2 million tax dollars to the private Senior Center, Inc. — from a Democrat-controlled BOS?

Can you say: thanks for voting?

Read the following excellent article from Charlottesville Tomorrow, the local media source that broke the news Monday about The Senior Center, Inc.’s pan-handling of the six Democrats on the Albemarle BOS:

Notice that County Executive Tom Foley is already saying he thinks taking $2 million out of our billfolds and purses to give to the membership club for mostly affluent senior citizens would “score well” in Albemarle’s Capital Improvement system.

Kudos also to NBC29 reporter Nora Neus for quickly getting Rio District Supervisor Brad Sheffield on the record saying he supports giving away $2 million of Albemarle taxpayer funds to The Senior Center, Inc:

Since seeing Brad’s comment, I e-mailed him that he should recuse himself from any votes on tax dollars to The Senior Center, Inc. Brad lives in the Belvedere subdivision, the future home of the private organization he wants to give a handout to with your money and mine.

I signed my e-mail: “Disappointed and angry,”

That's how I expect I will remain at least through November 7, 2017.
